Science-based targets provide companies with a clearly defined pathway to future-proof growth by specifying how much and how quickly they need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The Paris Agreement in 2015 saw 195 of the world’s governments commit to prevent dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius. Many companies are already demonstrating they have the expertise and ingenuity to make science based targets a reality, and need ambitious emissions reduction targets that ensure the action they take is aligned with current climate science. At Verdani, we help our clients re-evaluate their emissions reduction target to be in line with the level of decarbonization required to keep global temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius.

In July 2018, in partnership with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), Verdani Partners joined hundreds of companies committing to taking action to embrace climate science. In January 2021, our target was approved.

-50%

in absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 from a 2018 baseline

As part of our SBTi target, we aim to reduce absolute scope 1 & 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 from a 2018 baseline year. Additionally, Verdani intends to limit scope 3 emissions by internally tracking and engaging the team to minimize our overall carbon footprint. Our target is in line with keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

As of year end 2020, we have achieved a 9% reduction from our 2018 baseline, which is 18% towards our goal!

SDGs

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted after a multi-year global process involving civil society, government, the private sector and academia, with the support of all 193 U.N. Member States, are part of a wider 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 17 SDGs cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: Economic Growth, Social Inclusion and Environmental Protection, with 169 targets that are broad in scope and address the universal need for development that works for all people. The SDGs appear to be the closest to a common classification system widely adopted across the public and private sectors.

Many companies already act and report on areas covered by the SDGs, such as climate change, energy and water management and making healthy and safe working environments. Verdani Partners helps its clients adopt an SDG framework to evaluate potential impacts, measure performance of their ESG program and guides them in integrating the SDGs into corporate reporting. Read about SDG guidelines and read about our clients who have set goals a targets aligned with SDGs in their annual reports.

At Verdani, we have initiated our own path to align our mission, vision and core values with the SDGs. We look forward to announcing our SDGs framework later this year.
